Blog Post for Post University Project dated July 17, 11:37pm! I am debating tonight as we have Midnight deadline and my indecision about what to blog is now over. My catchy phrase tonight will be the subject of online bullying. What are your thoughts on this subject and how could we as educators or anyone in any walk of life either control it or protect our children or family member, co-worker from it?
According to Stopbullying.gov “Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior.” (Stopbullying.gov)
Now we have a very detailed definition of cyberbullying and here is a link from the Stopbullying.gov website:
(Stopbullying.gov)
According to Stopbullying.gov the most common places for cyberbullying to occur are “social media sites including Facebook, Instagram Snapchat, and Tik Tok, Instant Messaging, direct messaging, and online chatting over the internet.” (Stopbullying.com)
Even online forums such as chat room, message boards including Reddit, Email and Online Gaming Communities can be involved as well. (Stopbullying.com)
More food for thought can be found on how to control this at with the following link from Stopbullying.gov at:
In Connecticut my home state cyber bulling is against the law as listed below in research by: https://cyberbullying.org/bullying-laws/connecticut
Cyberbullying is defined here as:
CT HB07215 (signed by governor on July 8, 2019). (1) “Bullying” means [(A) the repeated use by one or more students of a written, oral or electronic communication, such as cyberbullying, directed at or referring to another student attending school in the same school district, or (B) a physical act or gesture by one or more students repeatedly directed at another student attending school in the same school district, that: (i) Causes physical or emotional harm to such student or damage to such student’s property, (ii) places such student in reasonable fear of harm to himself or herself, or of damage to his or her property, (iii) creates a hostile environment at school for such student, (iv) infringes on the rights of such student at school, or (v) substantially disrupts the education process or the orderly operation of a school] an act that is direct or indirect and severe, persistent or pervasive, which (A) causes physical or emotional harm to an individual, (B) places an individual in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm, or (C) infringes on the rights or opportunities of an individual at school. In schools for example Connecticut offers this information through this link:
H.B. 5826 (2008): http://www.cga.ct.gov/2008/ACT/PA/2008PA-00160-R00HB-05826-PA.htm Requires schools/school districts to implement anti-bullying policies.
There is so much more to investigate on this subject and I am learning a plethora of information just searching this for our Post University online blogging project and hope to hear thoughts on this subject.
Thank you!
Andrew
